A Good Leader — A Shepherd’s Heart and the Ministry of Love

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (John 10:11)

🌱 Introduction

What kind of leader can break the chains of fear and heal the wounds of the soul? The Bible gives us two pictures: Saul, overcome with jealousy and fear, hunted David with the sword (1 Samuel 18:9-11); and David, who humbly said, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall lack nothing" (Psalm 23:1). Here we see the difference between leadership of fear and leadership of faith.

History also testifies. Other leaders used force to suppress the truth - like Luther's opponents who sought to silence him. But Luther, with a heart of courage and dedication, stood as a true shepherd, risking his life for the Gospel. This lesson invites us to look at Christ, the Good Shepherd, so that we can learn the heart of compassion and the leadership of self-sacrifice for others.

Expected Results:

To recognize the pastoral heart as the essence of spiritual leadership.

1. Jesus - the Good Shepherd

John 10:11 - "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep."

Jesus breaks the concept of worldly leadership. Some see authority as a tool to rule, but Jesus saw it as an opportunity to give. His majesty was manifested not on the throne, but on the cross. A true leader measures his value not by the number of those who served him, but by the level of love he showered on others.

2. Service is Caring, Not Controlling

1 Peter 5:2-3 - "Shepherd the flock of God that is among you... not under compulsion, but willingly; not for profit, but with a spirit of service."

Peter shouts the difference. A true leader is not a dictator but a guardian. He is the one who takes action to lift others up instead of bringing them down. In a world where power is often used to injure, the Gospel calls leaders to use their positions as healing hands and tears of compassion.

3. Compassion is the Foundation of Leadership

Matthew 9:36 - "When he saw the crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were tired and scattered like sheep without a shepherd."

Jesus didn't just see the crowd, He saw broken hearts. His compassion became a bridge between heaven and earth. This is the spirit of a true leader: not just seeing numbers, but life. Compassion turns power into service and power into healing.

4. Authority Comes from Surrender

Philippians 2:5-8 - "Have the same mind in you that was in Christ Jesus... he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross."

Jesus showed us that true leadership is not built on honor but on humility. He left the heavenly realms to take the form of a slave. His unique authority was based on his surrender. In the same way, the leader of Christ gains power not by rank, but by the sacrifice of his life.

5. The Pastor Lifts Others

2 Timothy 2:2 - "And those things which you heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust them to faithful people who will also be able to teach others."

Paul makes it clear: leadership is not the end of the leader, but the development of others. A true pastor seeks to inherit, not to retain. His success is measured by the new generation that continues to carry the torch of the Gospel, not just the memory of his personal name.

🛐 Application of the Lesson in Life

Pray: Lord, teach me the heart of a shepherd and the grace of self-sacrifice.

Read: Psalm 23 - "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall lack nothing."

Share: Visit or call someone in pain, share a word of comfort.

Do: Look at your leadership position – is it uplifting others or using them to your advantage?

Do: Look at your leadership position – is it lifting others up or using them to your advantage?

Do you see those you lead as God's people or the level of your personal dreams?

Has your heart ever been touched by the suffering of others as Jesus had mercy on the congregation?

Where have you been harsh instead of being a compassionate pastor?

Have you seen your authority as a chance to surrender or defend yourself?

Have you seen your authority as a chance to surrender or protect yourself?

Who are you developing today to be a leader tomorrow?

May the good shepherd cover you with his love. May he inspire you with the spirit of compassion and the strength to give. May he guide you to love, protect and guide others in a gentle way. Be a leader with the heart of Christ, blessing and being blessed. Amen.
